On the occasion of 77th Anniversary of the Organization
Today, humanity is experiencing dramatic and tragic situations that reflect either the weakness, for known or unknown reasons, of political will on the part of - primarily - the powerful players in the international arena for the management of power, but also on the part of the rest who are not without responsibility for the taking place, or their deliberate and methodical action or synergy in the developments and meta-developments that are conceived in the extracorporeal tubes of the due to intertwining competition and that pose serious risks to humanity.
However, in all this complex and tragic picture, the institutional "protagonist" of international relations, the UN, is essentially absent! And they are surprised by those who follow with responsibility and seriousness the dramatic and/or tragic events that are happening on planet Earth, starting from the ongoing war conflicts, international or civil wars in many parts of the world, the hunger that is reaping millions of people, the countless armies of refugees, the negative effects of climate change, the increasing epidemic diseases, crime, drugs and so much suffering that contains the modern inhumane "Pandora's box", where , however, hope has been introduced to the global stock market.
And they wonder where is the UN, which, as you know, was founded out of the nightmarish ashes of World War II (with approximately 80 million human victims) in order to defend and consolidate international peace, the protection and promotion of human rights, the international cooperation for the progress and development of all states?
It is known that the Organization, in addition to the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and the International Court of Justice, has dozens of Specialized and other Organizations to solve the problems of humanity, such as the World Health Organization, the Food Organization and Agriculture, the Program for Development, the Program for the Environment, the Organization for Industrial Development, the World Trade Organization, UNESCO, UNICEF, etc.
And the absence of the UN, beyond itself at the political level, is seen every day especially in the media, at international conferences and other NGO events where it is rare to refer to the Organization as if it does not exist or has gone on vacation! The case of his Conference is typical ΝΑΤΟ in Athens last year, where Delegates from various countries spoke, but there was not even a mention of the UN. It must be pointed out and underlined that NATO was established in accordance with the UN Charter (Article 52) to represent it regionally, promoting its principles and ideals, but not to replace it as happened with the breakup of Yugoslavia and now with war tragedy in Ukraine. And, of course, they touched on the developments in Ukraine, but the role and absence of the Organization were not even commented on.
The same applies to the media, which, as a rule, ignored or demoted him. And this war tragedy continues with the cynical indifference of almost everyone in red as if it were a movie thriller! Dehumanization? A naughty throwback to the Middle Ages? It is strange that the media deal methodically and exclusively with the Ukrainian issue, and yet with other serious problems such as Cyprus, Middle East, Kurdish, "silent fish"! And the UN is absent!
And it is - tragic irony - what the infamous Mussolini had said about the League of Nations (League of Nations) that it works when sparrows fly, but not when eagles fly, that is, it is effective in small issues, but not big ones involving the Powerful. Unfortunately, the same, proportionally, applies to the UN which has been deliberately weakened by the Great Powers mainly with the scandalous privilege, the VETO (Right of Veto). However, the famous - but forgotten - statement made by the Eupatride American Senator William Fulbright at an international conference in 1972 is also relevant, that it is wrong for the small and medium Powers to treat the big Powers with a spirit of servitude, but instead they should cooperate and impose on the Greats their respect for the UN!
It is now obvious, after the failure of the League of Nations to ban war in general (Kellogg-Briand Pact) and later of the UN with the Peace Guide of Boutros Boutros-Ghali (whose term was not renewed, but before, "known-unknown "they had elected a former Nazi officer to use him for their own interests!) that in the dark behind the scenes inhumane circles of stiff competition for profit are operating, who remain unmoved and cynically indifferent to the loss of human souls, and all they care about is the satisfaction of their inhuman passions. And it is the same circuits that are undermining the UN. Certainly, we must not forget the important contribution of the Organization with its Peacekeeping Forces in various parts of the world, as well as that of its Organizations. But in the crucial matter of international peace, his offer is incomplete precisely because the conflicting interests of the Great Powers in particular stand in the way. Also, do Member States vote in accordance with the principles and ideals of the Charter, International Law and the UDHR, or not?
And it is sad to hear from the common citizen "which UN?", "where is the UN?", "why is the UN not intervening?" But, instead of looking for the responsibilities in Member States of the Organization, they blamelessly place them collectively on the Organization. It is as if they lay the blame in general on the Church or other public body for any errors or illegalities of some of their officials.
Unfortunately, as in other serious issues plaguing society, there is obvious apathy, and the same is observed in the operation of international organizations, while the people should, through holistic education, media (some of which scandalously project the subculture), NGOs, etc. . to inform and react unitedly to promote respect for these Organizations on whose proper functioning their very life and well-being depend!
The UN Charter begins with: "We the people of the United Nations". What, therefore, are the people doing to strengthen his work, such as UN Associations, etc. bodies that are supposed to promote the principles and purposes of the Organization. But also journalistic, literary, artistic, etc. unions? INDIFFERENCE! They fuss and worry about other things. And then the UN is to blame! "OHE is what its Member States want it to be"! RESIST!
