The Hellenic Film Festival 2024 is ready to enchant the audience with a special selection of films and documentaries that celebrate Greek culture through cinema. Presented by the Hellenic Community of Melbourne (HMC), this year's festival will run from October 15 to October 27 with more screening rooms such as the iconic Astor Theatre, the Palace Cinema Just like, the Palace A balloon Cinema and, for the first time, the Palace Cinemas Pentridge.
The festival starts on October 15th with hilarious comedy Hear Who's Talking starring Ilias Meletis (The Soi Sou, The Consul of Julia). The opening film sets the tone for a program that includes 23 feature films and 7 documentaries, each offering a unique look at contemporary Greek society.
One of the highlights of this year's festival is the Australian premiere of the award-winning film The Killer. Based on the classic novel by Alexandros Papadiamantis, The Killer set on a remote Greek island circa 1900. Trapped in her own mother's rejection and struggling from a young age, Hadoula is a woman who learned to survive in a male-dominated and highly patriarchal society the hard way. The film has received critical acclaim, winning 12 awards and receiving 14 nominations at film festivals worldwide. The leading role is played by Kariofyllia Karabeti (Eftychia), who enchants the audience with her amazing performance.
The documentary section of the festival includes a number of fascinating films. Important among them is Australian Ange & The Boss – Puskas in Australia by award-winning directors Tony Wilson and Cam Finch. The storied career of the great Hungarian striker Ferenc Puskas as a player and manager ended in the relative isolation of Middle Park in Melbourne, where he coached South Melbourne Hellas under current Spurs manager Angelos Postecoglou. A sporting story of a humble football giant in the new world of football, full of quirky anecdotes and a thrilling championship finale. Also, a story of Australia's national football heritage and how it supported new arrivals.
Ο Peter Ewer, author of The Forgotten Anzacs, and the acclaimed director John irwin bring the feature-length documentary to the public Anzacs: The greek Chapters. April 1941 – Hitler begins his invasion of Greece. In homes across Australia and New Zealand, people fear what will happen to their loved ones who were sent as part of the allied force to defend Greece. The documentary tells the story of this brave defense like never before. Narrated by Barrie Cassidy, whose father served in the campaign, the documentary is a unique account of that campaign and the Anzacs who served there. A document of this key part of the Greek connection to Anzac history. You shouldn't miss it.
Although contemporary cinema is the main part of the Festival's program, this year's closing ceremony pays tribute to a giant of the golden age of Greek cinema, Mary Chronopoulou, with a very special screening of the classic 1968 film Mermaids and Mages.
