The Greek Community of Melbourne (ECM) organized the exclusive premiere of the film “Stelios” on Wednesday night. The biographical film was screened at the Astor Cinema, to a packed house. The event attracted fans of Greek cinema.
Among those in attendance were the Consul General of Greece in Melbourne, Dimitra Georgantzoglou, as well as media representatives and members of the community. The guests gathered to hear the story of Stelios Kazantzidis – a renowned Greek singer whose life and music resonated with generations of Greeks both in Greece and abroad.
The film, directed with care and respect for detail, follows Kazantzidis' life, from his early difficulties to his rise as a cultural figure. It combines archival material and appearances by the artist, examining themes of immigration, hardship and the role of music in expressing collective experience.
Vasilis Papastergiadis, President of the Greek Music Council, commented: “The film “Stelios” reminds us of the stories that shaped our community. It is a timely and representative portrayal of an artist whose music meant a great deal to many, especially immigrants who identified with his lyrics.”
Leonidas Vlahakis, President of the Cultural Committee of the Greek Film Festival, added: “This film gives voice to a part of our cultural identity that is often difficult to express. It is important that we continue to support projects like this, which reflect our heritage and experiences.”
Due to high demand, another screening will be held at the Astor Cinema on Sunday, April 27, prior to the film's general release in Australian cinemas.
