The first impressive event for the data of the self-governing elections to date is the appointment to the position of the mayor of Athens of an unknown to the general public, but known and recognized in the scientific world, Professor Harry Doukas, who in a short time, and after a proposal from PASOK-KINAL, achieved the impossible! And this, against a very experienced in self-government and a successful opponent in the past, who in the first round, was very close to victory.
The "golden opportunity", which the former mayor mentioned at the beginning of the telefight, which he proposed, turned out to be "golden" for the new mayor, whose example is also deeply instructive for our young people today.
The second, equally impressive fact is the change in results between the first and second rounds with the same voters who, as it turns out, changed their first choice. Why ; My humble answer has two parts: first, the voters, even the ND supporters, were disturbed by the arrogance of the party that is absolutely dominant in the political life of the country, and above all by the provocative interventions of the Prime Minister himself and the his strong support for candidates, who have proven to be failures, having even harmed the lives of citizens themselves. Result of these improper actions: all the supported failed with the exception of Mr. D. Ptochos, and he, with the support of Mr. A. Samaras, and the ND. failed in the second round. It is clear that in some cases the vote against the ND it worked as a…referendum.
Second, the appearance of an objectively worthy candidate is logical and fair to attract voters, who know how to evaluate. And it turned out that there are many in Athens!
However, the fact that needs special attention is the abstention of citizens, which occurs not only in municipal elections but also in national ones. The result of this abstention is that the real will of the people is not expressed, but the will of a majority. The issue, I believe, should be of particular concern to our politicians, regardless of party, because the long-term consequences will be very negative.
As a native of Athens, I applaud the election of the new mayor, I applaud meritocracy in any field of social life, which today, unfortunately, is hard to find.
