Rep Gus Bilirakis Press Release 09.12.2021

12 Sep, 2021
September 12, 2021 Dear Neighbor, There are some events that forever alter the landscape of history. These moments and how we respond to them reveal a great deal about who we are as people and what we value as a society. Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of one such occasion- the 9/11 terrorist attack on our nation. My staff and I were honored to participate in several memorial events throughout the district as we remembered this solemn occasion. No American will ever forget the horrific images and tragic stories that were broadcast in the days following the attacks. Those stories and images broke our collective hearts and we all grieved for the 2,977 lives that were taken too soon. However, there was also a tremendous sense of unity during the days that followed 9/11. All that mattered was that we were all Americans. In my opinion, the term hero gets used too often. But on that fateful day and many that followed, we saw true acts of heroism abound. Countless fire rescue, police, and other first responders ran into burning buildings – knowing that they likely would not survive but trying to save as many people as possible. We saw coworkers, friends, and even strangers helping each other. We saw passengers on a plane hatch a scheme to thwart further disaster, knowing that even if they failed to safely land the plane they could keep it from being used to kill more people at its intended target. Our enemies sought to destroy our way of life. Instead, they discovered the depths of our resiliency, the strength of our resolve, and our unwavering commitment to one another. Now known as Patriot Day, September 11th has become a day to honor the victims of this horrific tragedy through service to others. That is the legacy that is left behind in the aftermath of our national trauma. We also saw brave men and women who represent the best among us step up to wage a war against terror itself. In total, more than 250,000 Americans enlisted in active duty or reservist service during the year following September 11th. They were committed to taking the battle to the enemy to protect our homeland from further attacks. They served with honor and distinction and sacrificed a great deal. In total more than 60,000 members of our military have been killed or wounded in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). I know many of these heroes and their families have experienced great heartache, frustration, and anger surrounding our recent withdrawal from Afghanistan. Last week, I held sessions to listen to my constituents who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. They shared their experiences and discussed the disappointment they have felt while watching events unfold in recent weeks. I let them know that our nation is grateful for their service and will work to hold this Administration accountable for its actions. I reminded them that it is also important not to lose sight of what has been accomplished. Due to the actions of our OEF and OIF Veterans, we have not seen a large-scale terror attack on American soil in the past twenty years. That is a meaningful accomplishment and a tribute to their unwavering efforts. As we reflect on this 20th anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on our nation, may we remember the victims, honor the heroes who responded to the crisis, and rekindle the spirit of unity that spread across our country after the tragedy. It is through that unity that we will find our best path forward. Please continue reading for a summary of my work on your behalf last week. Protecting and Supporting our Children According to this article, Tampa Bay teens are more depressed and anxious than ever. Experts believe bullying and unhealthy images on social media play a large role in this problem. The most egregious type of online bullying comes in the form of child sexual exploitation, which is why I am working on legislation to hold social media companies accountable for not removing explicit material of our youth from their platforms. In general, we must do a better job protecting our children’s mental health from the dangers that are often associated with online activities. If you have ideas you would like to see incorporated into my legislation on this important subject, please email them to: ChildOnlineProtection@mail.house.gov. Last week, I had the pleasure to visit the James P. Gills YMCA in Pasco County. It was great to learn more about the YMCA of the Suncoast’s targeted programs for at-risk youth. It is wonderful to see such an investment in providing young people with opportunities for success! Combatting Human Trafficking I was also honored to attend “A Night of Hope & Healing” presented by the Florida Alliance to End Human Trafficking last week. Keynote speaker, Florida AG Ashley Moody, discussed the State of Florida’s efforts to end this terrible scourge on our society. Congratulations to Jack and Barbara Nicklaus who were honored as recipients of the Hope Award. I will continue working at the federal level to provide more support for victims and hold those who facilitate this horrific crime accountable. Stopping Abuses of Power Last week the President announced Executive Orders and federal policies mandating vaccines for an estimated 100 million Americans. This includes all federal government workers, businesses with over 100 employees, and any employee of a business who contracts with the federal government or receives reimbursement from a government program such as Medicare or Medicaid. This is an example of government overreach at its worst. Let me be clear, while I personally chose to get vaccinated, I believe this is a personal choice that every American should make after consultation with his or her doctor. I am strongly opposed to this type of government mandate, and I am working with my colleagues to determine how we can best stop this dictatorial behavior. Lowering Prescription Drug Prices The FDA reached an important milestone in the fight to reduce the cost of prescription drugs– 100 lower-cost, generic medications have now been approved through the Competitive Generic Therapy (CGT) program. This program was created by a law I coauthored in 2017 to encourage the development of generic alternatives for products with no competition on the market. While I understand that we must do more to help reduce the cost of all prescription medications for Americans, this is an important step in the right direction. Securing our Border and Defending our Nation Finally there has been a slight step in the right direction when it comes to restoring order at the border. It is a shame the Administration had to be forced by the United States Supreme Court to reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy! With the mess in Afghanistan, we know our enemies are more emboldened than ever before. I am sure you share my outrage that Al Qaeda praised the Taliban’s “historic victory” in Afghanistan just days before the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. It is just another sign that securing our border has become an urgent matter of national security. Safely Evacuating Americans and our Allies There is a reason we do not leave Americans behind. It has been reported that the Taliban held several planes carrying Americans from leaving Afghanistan. While some have subsequently been allowed to leave, many are still left waiting. We must do everything we can to make sure they all get out safely. Heading in the Wrong Direction There are many signs that our economy is heading in the wrong direction and that Americans are paying more for every aspect of life because of the bad economic policies being pushed by leftists in Congress and the White House. Inflation is a form of taxation and it hurts everyone. The $3.5 trillion spending bill we are being asked to consider next week will only exacerbate this problem. We simply cannot continue down a path that we know leads to economic ruin. Also, according to the most recent job report, 8.4 million Americans remain unemployed. This is despite there being 10.5 million job openings throughout the nation. The number of unfilled job openings has remained far above the 48-year historical average of 22%. These disappointing workforce figures continues to hurt the American economic recovery. Raising Awareness An estimated 22 Veterans per day commit suicide. This tragic and startling statistic is proof that we must do more to support those who have bravely served our country. We have passed new laws to enhance outreach and supportive services. However, during this Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month, I challenge each of you to reach out to the Veterans in your life, thank them for their service, and let them know they are not alone! Supporting Small Business Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. Each week we have the chance to highlight the success of businesses in our community that have recently opened or expanded. Congratulations to all our local job creators and best wishes for continued success in your venture! My team loves the opportunity to celebrate alongside you. Si Kicks Premier Sneakers, Apparel, & Collectables recently had a grand opening of their physical retail store at The Shops at Wiregrass. A portion of all proceeds were donated to the Defeat Suicide Foundation to support mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Todd Woodfill, a USAF Veteran and his wife, Holly, have opened a one-of-a-kind small business in Pasco County! Johnny Daniel, owner of Johnny’s Ice and Co. is proud to offer custom watches and specialty jewelry in his second location, just opened this week in Palm Harbor. Constituent Corner The message below was recently sent from a constituent and local small business owner after my team helped him with a visa issue. Only a few days after we requested your office’s assistance on the visa appointments of 4 Greek Artists, we received a call from the Athens US Ambassador’s office. They issued us appointments. I cannot tell you enough, that your efforts saved 10 companies and Greek organizations from great financial ruin (what would have been the second year we would not be allowed to produce concerts or raise funds for the Greek Church community.). I won’t mention the psychological damage we have endured from the pandemic. MY ETERNAL GRATITUDE AND RESPECT FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE. This is just one example of the work we do each day. Constituent services are a critical element of our congressional office. The federal government is a massive operation, and my office is available if you ever need assistance in navigating the bureaucracy or cutting through red tape. We are here to serve you! Sincerely, Gus Bilirakis Member of Congress
