The request of the Municipality of Aegina to declare the island in a state of Civil Protection Emergency was accepted today, due to the sudden and very serious damage to the underwater water pipeline, which has put the smooth water supply of the island of Aegina to a prolonged test.
By decision of the General Secretary of Civil Protection, the Municipality of Aegina is declared in a state of Emergency for a period of three (3) months, until May 11, 2026, in order to activate the envisaged Civil Protection mechanisms and to enable the acceleration of the necessary administrative and financial procedures.
This decision follows the documented request of the Municipality of Aegina, which was based on the prolonged outage of the island's only drinking water supply infrastructure and the serious impacts that this situation has on the daily lives of citizens, public health, the local economy and the operation of critical services.
The declaration of a State of Emergency is a necessary institutional tool for:
the acceleration of the permanent rehabilitation works of the submarine pipeline,
securing the required resources and funding,
and enhanced coordination of all stakeholders involved.
The Municipality of Aegina continues to be in constant operational readiness, making every effort to meet the needs of citizens and ensure public health, until the island's water supply is finally restored.
