The Vice-President of the Commission, Margaritis Schoinas Speaking to ERT's main news bulletin, he said: "It was proved last year in Evros, a few months ago on the Spanish-Moroccan border in the Spanish city of Ceuta and a few weeks ago on the Belarus-Lithuania border that no neighbor could blackmail Europe by instrumentalizing human suffering through the management of migration flows.
"Those who tried failed and today the president has found the right political moment to reiterate this message."
He also noted that "our neighbors must understand that in order to win, they must work with Europe, not against Europe in immigration."
Regarding immigration, he said that there is no information about "mass movements of Afghans to the European border". "But we must be vigilant and watch for developments as they unfold day by day." He also stressed that the EU will work "with the international community closer to the problem, close to Afghanistan, to neighboring countries, on the Silk Road so that we can support people coming out of Afghanistan close to the problem."
On the issue of the pandemic, he noted that "all those who rushed to blame Europe for the management of the pandemic, I believe, have understood that these criticisms were unfair and misplaced."
"European vaccination was a marathon, not a sprint, and Europe is winning that bet."
Finally, he stated that the European Commission will announce "the establishment of a new Community body, which will even have the ancient Greek name HERA, from Greek mythology ". "It will be a new organization, European, which will allow us to prepare before all these threats to public health appear," explained Margaritis Schoinas.
