To those who think that Greece does not matter today, let me say that they could not make a bigger mistake. Today, like old Greece, is of the utmost importance for anyone looking to find himself.

GREEK COMMUNITY OF MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA
28 May, 2024

The Hellenic Community of Melbourne (HECM) has welcomed the announcement by the Ministry of Tourism for the immediate operation of an office of the Hellenic Tourism Organization (HTO) at the Hellenic Center in Melbourne. More specifically, on May 21, the EOT announced the immediate recruitment for the position of Head, based at the Hellenic Center in Melbourne and area of local competence in Australia, New Zealand and the other Island States of Oceania.

In the last nine years, ECM made a series of contacts and correspondence with the Greek Government, the relevant ministries and the relevant bodies, promoting the request for the operation of an EOT office in Melbourne.

The president of ECM, Mr. Vassilis Papastergiadis, expressed his joy for this important initiative, stressing its importance for strengthening the ties not only between Greece and Australia, but also Greece's relations with the Greek diaspora. "We very much welcome this move, which will not only strengthen Greek-Australian relations, but also promote the cultural and tourism profile of our homeland."

Mr. Papastergiadis continued by saying "The Ministry of Tourism becomes yet another bridge that connects the Greek diaspora in Australia with the motherland. The EOT office in Melbourne will be a point of reference for the promotion of Greek tourism and history, as well as for the preservation of Greek cultural heritage through conferences, lectures and exhibitions, strengthening communication and cooperation with the Greek diaspora."

In closing, he said, "We have committed to providing the necessary space in the Greek Center building to host the EOT offices, even offering two years of free use of the facilities, without financial burden, as a return for the government's support to our community, in times of economic crisis. In addition, we maintain open channels of communication with the Greek institutions and actively cooperate to facilitate the relevant actions."

On the occasion of Mr. Papastergiadis' statement, enjonews.gr contacted the Ministry of Tourism and they were informed that the process is progressing and even with the indication of urgency bypassing any time-consuming process for the time being. The Ministry of Tourism told the journalist Mr. Manos Stavrianos, "The goal is to immediately staff the EOT office in Melbourne as requested by ECM so that it can start operating as soon as possible, which is very important in view of the tourist season."

Mr. Papastergiadis, in turn, on behalf of ECM and the parish, thanked Mr. Manos Stavrianos and his colleagues at enjoynews.gr for the interest they showed, as well as the initiative to investigate and get in touch with the Ministry of Tourism for this specific issue.

Attached below is the call for expressions of interest to fill the position of the Head of the Australian EOT Service, as published on the official website of the Hellenic Tourism Organization.
