When a book transports you to a time and place so far from that of your own, it can feel surreal. But the vivid images and events in the Greek village, as told by the author through his once young eyes, draw the reader directly into reality. Sometimes painful to read, one can feel the warmth of a mother, a culture steeped in tradition, and a love of life.
I applaud Mr. Kakridas for having the courage to open his wounds and share his past, leaving readers with true stories of a young boy trapped in two wars.
The historical information throughout the book provides important context for the events as they unfold. His love of family, homeland, and a new home in America is heartwarming.
