The lieutenant general e.a. and president of EL.I.S.ME. (Hellenic Institute of Strategic Studies – www.elisme.gr) Ioannis Baltzoi spoke about the developments in the war in Ukraine.
The discussion focuses on developments and concerns about the war in Ukraine, especially in the Donbas region, where Russian forces are making gains. Particular emphasis is placed on the city of Pokrovsk, which is an important accounting and traffic hub. Losing this city could cause the Ukrainian front to collapse due to lack of supplies.
According to Mr. Baltzois, analysts, including Ukrainian military, are expressing concerns about the situation in Pokrovsk, stressing that the Russians are advancing on the city. In addition, it is pointed out that the city is of strategic importance due to the huge reserves of lithium in the area, which is of particular interest to the West. America is pushing for the defense of Pokrovsk in order to protect these reserves.
Mr. Baltzoi also refers to the situation in the Kursk region, where the Russians have stabilized the front. The Ukrainians are having serious feeding and supply problems, while the Russians are advancing at a rate of 3-4 kilometers per day.
Ukraine also faces serious challenges in recruiting and training new soldiers, with violent recruitment methods frequently reported. There is a lack of trained reserves, which makes defending the country even more difficult. The Russians, on the other hand, continue to attack with determination.
Mr. Baltzois also refers to the recent statements of American officials, who strongly support Ukraine. Concerns are being expressed about the possibility of attacks on Russian soil, which could dramatically escalate the situation. These statements raise fears of a further worsening of the conflict.
Finally, it is reported that Russia and China are conducting large military gymnasiums called "Ocean-2024", which stretch from the Mediterranean to the Pacific Ocean. These gymnasiums, overseen by Vladimir Putin, show Russia's preparation for any eventuality, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
