The Centre for Training and Lifelong Learning (K.E.DI.VI.M) of the University of Crete organises a course titled: First steps into Greek language and culture.

Description
Program Duration and Structure
The program will run for 10 weeks, from June 1 to August 7, 2026. Classes will be held twice per week, with each session lasting 90 minutes.
The program will be delivered through e-learning, comprising 40 hours of synchronous instruction and 60 hours of asynchronous learning activities. Instruction will take place in small groups of 8–12 participants, ensuring active participation and individualized support.
Program Aim
The program aims to support participants in developing:
- Basic language skills corresponding to Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
- Foundational knowledge of key elements of Greek culture
Who may apply?
Anyone over 18 who is looking for a short introductory course in Modern Greek language and culture. Priority will be given to University of Crete in-coming students and faculty who participate in various Erasmus+ programmes or are enrolled in an English-speaking course at UoC. Ηοwever, anyone who is a zero beginner in Greek is eligible for participation.
NB! Students, faculty and administrative staff from members of the INGENIUM Alliance are exempt from paying fees.
Cost
300 euros to be paid before the beginning of the course (1-20/05/2026).
Learning Objectives
Cognitive Skills
Participants will:
- Learn and apply basic elements of Greek grammar, including the present tense, past tense (aorist), grammatical case, and agreement between adjectives and nouns
- Acquire and use basic Greek vocabulary, including numbers, days, months, colors, everyday objects, services, and shops
- Develop cultural awareness regarding attitudes and behaviors within Greek culture
Psychomotor Skills
Participants will engage in activities that encourage the practical use of language in communicative contexts.
These activities will include interactive tasks and role-playing scenarios aimed at:
- Facilitating interaction in simple and everyday communicative situations
- Enabling participants to address and manage basic daily needs
Attitudes and Behavioral Competencies
The program also seeks to foster the development of positive attitudes and social competencies by:
- Promoting understanding of the attitudes and behavioral norms of members of the Greek-speaking linguistic community
- Supporting participants’ social inclusion and integration into a new social environment
- Encouraging positive attitudes toward the Greek-speaking linguistic community
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Participants’ learning outcomes will be assessed through:
- Evaluation of assignments and preparatory study submitted through the online learning platform
- Assessment of oral performance during synchronous sessions
- A two-hour written final examination conducted via live teleconference
To successfully complete the program, participants must obtain a minimum overall score of 5/10. In addition, absences may not exceed 10% of the total instructional hours (synchronous), corresponding to a maximum of four hours.
