Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will chair a cabinet meeting on Thursday, March 9, to discuss issues related to the tragic rail accident at Tempi (possible legislative actions, measures that must be taken immediately, etc.).
According to sources, there will be no other items on the agenda.
Also on Friday, March 10, the prime minister will visit the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou for their regular monthly meeting. According to sources, the visit is not connected to any other issue.
The expert committee set up by the infrastructure and transport ministry to look into systemic problems behind the train disaster at Tempi has decided on the three next steps, according to an announcement the committee chair Ioannis Halkias on Tuesday. The committee had its first meeting on Monday.
The first is to ask all bodies involved to immediately hand over information and evidence relating to the accident. Secondly, it will summon staff and executives to clarify actions and omissions regarding the systemic problems that concern the rail network’s operation and safety. Thirdly, it will assess all the evidence and submit its report, which will include proposals for correcting the problems that are found.
The executive director of the European Union Agency for Railways, Josef Doppelbauer, and the European Commission director for land transport, Kristian Schmidt, will visit Athens on Wednesday.
The European officials’ visit to Athens was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in social media on Monday, following a phone call with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Elzbieta Lukaniuk, responsible for railway security at the office of European Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean, will also be visiting.
These EU officials will be meeting with Greek authorities to discuss technical support for the modernization and safety improvement of Greek railways.
