Pentagon: Alarm over possible cyberattacks on military base refrigerators – Food destroyed overnight - AI Created

Mysterious malfunctions in freezers at at least six US military installations are being investigated as possible cyber-sabotage. A similar attack in France hit more than 350 supermarkets, causing widespread food damage and fires.

An unusual case is under the microscope of American military authorities. Freezers and commercial refrigerators on military bases in the United States have shown unexplained malfunctions, resulting in the destruction of large quantities of food.

The Pentagon is now examining the possibility that the incidents were not due to ordinary technical failures, but to an organized cyberattack.

According to an exclusive report by Reuters on October 29, 2026, four officials with knowledge of the matter confirmed that US authorities are treating the malfunctions as a possible incident of cyber sabotage.

Freezers started heating food

The incidents occurred in late August 2026 and affected at least six military food stores, known as commissariats.

These are facilities from which military personnel and other beneficiaries are supplied with food.

What is particularly worrying is that, in at least one case, the freezers did not simply stop working.

Instead of keeping the food frozen, they went into defrost mode, raising the temperature inside.

At the Fort Huachuca military base in Arizona, the administration announced on August 26 that a freezer had activated the defrost function, causing stored food to heat up and spoil.

The unusual behavior of the cooling systems reinforced suspicions that there may have been external interference with the electronic control mechanisms.

However, to date it has not been confirmed that the malfunctions were caused by hackers.

The Pentagon and the Cyber Command are investigating

The case has mobilized specialized American services.

The Pentagon confirmed that a unit of the US Cyber Command is working with other government agencies and law enforcement authorities.

The Cyber Investigations Office of the US Army Criminal Investigation Service is also participating in the investigation.

Authorities have not yet announced the exact cause of the incidents or the identity of possible perpetrators.

The fact that the problems occurred at different military facilities within the same period of time is an important element of the investigation, but does not in itself prove a coordinated attack.

France: Cyberattack on more than 350 supermarkets

The American investigation takes on greater significance due to a confirmed cyberattack that occurred in France in October.

According to Reuters, unknown perpetrators gained access to control systems of commercial refrigerators and freezers, affecting more than 350 stores.

In some facilities, temperatures even rose to 50 degrees Celsius.

The attack caused the spoilage of huge quantities of food, while incidents of fire in refrigeration units were also recorded.

Among the businesses affected were large French supermarket chains, such as Carrefour, Intermarché, Monoprix and Cooperative U.

The financial losses were estimated to reach tens of millions of euros.

US military authorities are in contact with French law enforcement agencies, seeking information on the technical methods used.

There is, however, no evidence that the incidents in the two countries are linked or that they were carried out by the same perpetrators.

How can hackers hack a refrigerator?

The answer lies in the technology now used in modern refrigeration installations.

Many commercial refrigerators and freezer systems have electronic controllers connected to the internet.

This capability allows technicians to remotely monitor and adjust temperature, diagnose faults and perform maintenance.

At the same time, however, it creates new security risks.

If electronic systems use outdated software or lack adequate protection, they can become a target for cybercriminals.

In the French attack, researchers identified security issues in cooling systems that used software from companies such as Danfoss and Copeland.

Danfoss said that several affected units were running outdated software versions or equipment that was no longer supported with security updates.

It has not been proven that the same systems were used at the US military facilities that experienced problems.

A new threat to food security

This specific case highlights a lesser-known dimension of cyberwarfare.

Attacks are no longer limited to data theft, banking transactions, or government communication infrastructure.

They can affect systems that ensure food preservation and distribution.

A prolonged interruption of the cold chain can lead to major economic losses, supply problems and public health risks.

In the case of military installations, the security of food supplies takes on additional operational importance.

If it is proven that the malfunctions in the United States were intentionally caused, the case would be a prime example of how a cyberattack can cause real material damage without the use of conventional weapons.

The crucial question

The American investigation is now called upon to answer three basic questions:

Was there actually unauthorized access to the cooling systems?

Are these isolated technical malfunctions or a coordinated malicious action?

And, if a cyberattack is confirmed, who is behind it?

Until the investigation is completed, the answers remain unknown.

The incident, however, is a warning of a new reality: even the infrastructure that keeps our food safe now needs protection from cyberattacks.
